In the USA and the UK, there has been an influx of news coverage about wish lanterns. Mostly these have been very positive but some have chosen to focus on problems with the product ….. with the scaremongers elevating this to an issue for society at large. There have been farmers who denounced sky lanterns as “lethal litter” which also pose a serious threat to cows who might inadvertently chomp down the small wire attached to the fuel cells.

There were the coastguards and local residents who mistook the lanterns for distress signals, oh, and there were residents of Kinmen, Taiwan who asked for sky lanterns to be banned when they supposedly caused a fire. It seems that these one hundred percent biodegradable, delicate decorative party accessories, are society’s latest menace…I think not.

Here’s the truth of it, Sky lanterns, Chinese lanterns and Wish lanterns, are safe when used correctly. As with a car it’s what some individuals choose to do with them that causes the real problems. If you read the safety instructions (or just use a bit of common sense), you’ll note that it is never a good idea to release a lantern in a wooded area (nor in a mine zone as was the case in Taiwan), or when it is particularly windy (as their flight path becomes unpredictable), nor should you let intoxicated, irresponsible individuals, or youngsters handle the lanterns, lest they break them, or burn themselves. There is no reason at all why lanterns should be considered safety hazards.

Even the farmers’ gripe hasn’t much weight to it. Of course lantern litter- like any litter- should always be disposed of safely at the earliest opportunity, but purchase from a supplier like us – www.skywishlanterns.com – and you will be purchasing a lantern without any wire. And lastly if you think through the nature of the product once up in the air it is impossible for a Wishlantern to come down until the flame has extinguished itself. This is simple physics and I am surprised it is down to us to explain this to a fire chief – surely this man has educated advisors.

The real problem is that Wish lanterns are becoming immensely popular. With more and more people releasing them than ever before, there will inevitably be the odd complication. These are isolated cases however so, what I advise, is that you just take a bit of care whilst you enjoy yourself. Simple.”

Over in the United Kingdom there is a festival called the Big chill, you can find out more about it here It is one of the more family friendly parties, a lot less chaotic than say Glastonbury or Global Gathering which attract a fair few crazy ravers!

Chicago residents recently thought they witnessed UFOs slowly moving above the city’s south side. A woman driving along 35th Street and Western Avenue around 8 p.m. saw nearly a dozen people looking up at the sky. When she herself spotted the orange-colored blinking lights moving in the sky, she took a video with her mobile phone camera. One person on the video can be heard saying, “They came from Roswell,” a reference to the famous 1947 crash of an alleged alien craft in Roswell, New Mexico. But these “flying saucers soon became IFOs (identified flying objects). Renee Hutchinson, founder and president of the Baby James Foundation – which fights for strict child abuse laws – said the mystery nighttime lights were lanterns released in memory of abuse victims. The organization launched the lanterns as part of their annual anti-child-abuse rally “in honor of the angels”. It may seem an unusual way to get attention for the cause, but the point is…it worked.

Using the small sky lanterns for special celebrations is more customary, but using them on behalf of worthy causes, why not?

Freedom Faithnet Global had organized the event, which had an environmental focus, as a symbol of hope and prayer. Before releasing the lanterns the participants had written their dreams and wishes on them. As the lanterns flew aloft the crowds laughed, cheered and hugged one another, celebrating the fact that they were donating their dreams to the infinite sky. In 2011, though, Poland challenged the record. To mark the first day of summer and the longest day of the year on June 21, residents of the Poznan area launched 11,000 lanterns, although it remains to be seen if the Guinness Book of Records will ratify the number. In any case, Poland aims to break the record officially in 2012.

Why not give the guests are your next party or special event a Wish lantern each so they, too, can celebrate the occasion and offer their wishes and dreams to the heavens – if not, perhaps, The Guinness Book of Records?
