Winter is one of our favourite times of the year, there’s Christmas, New Year’s Eve, lots of holidays and best of all its ski season! Here at Sky Wish Lanterns, we love to ski and snowboard all over the country. This year we’ve tried our hand on the slopes on the east side in the Lake Tahoe region – Sugar Bowl, Alpine Meadows and Kirkwood. And boy, were we in for a treat! These resorts are small enough that you didn’t have to wait in massive long lift lines or try to ski down the trail at slow speed to avoid a head on collision with the people who are already on there, but big enough that you didn’t find yourself doing the same run time after time. There were plenty of the mountains to explore.
Sugar Bowl is gorgeous, it has nice big bowls you can play around in as well as lots of nice groomers for those not into the off-piste action. There’s also a mad terrain park for the younger generation who like to jump and slide around at high speeds. Watch out, because on a powder day, Sugar Bowl goes off!
Alpine Meadows is on the back side of the huge Squaw Valley Mountain, but unlike its neighbour, Alpine Meadows is not a large resort, but it does have its pockets of extreme terrain scattered around and gets its fair share of powder.
Kirkwood is around the other side of Lake Tahoe and takes a little while to get there by car from Alpine Meadows or Sugar Bowl but can be done easily enough. Kirkwood is one of those resorts that doesn’t have the best village or high tech lifts but it’s got a great vibe about the place and pretty spectacular views. There are also lots of really nice long runs to give your legs a work out.
Pack some Sky Lanterns in with your ski and snowboard gear next time you head off to the snow – Sky Lanterns look gorgeous once released in the winter surroundings.
