St Patrick’s Day traditionally was a holiday only the Irish celebrated, as it marked the death of their patron Saint, St Patrick. However, to spread the word and increase tourism it soon became a popular tourist attraction in Ireland to head there to celebrate the holiday and now it’s celebrated in many countries around the world.
It’s an extremely popular event in the United States as many of the Irish immigrated to the states back when Ireland was going through a rough patch so there are plenty of Irish people there of many generation who celebrate the holiday.
There is always a St Patrick’s Day parade down the centre of the city, lined with people all wearing green and waving the Irish flag. There’s also always usually a fireworks display which is set off in the evening with green fireworks. If you are looking for something to use in the parade, you could get some green sky lanterns and take them along. They would look magical up in the sky floating above the parade.
