Paper Lanterns and the Environment

Over the past few weeks we’ve had some customers ask us about the environmental factors to do with our paper lanterns, such as are they safe for the environment, are they biodegradable, are they lit when they float back to the ground and are they safe to use over water. All these questions are fair to ask, paper lanterns which are also known as sky lanterns and wish lanterns, are still relatively new to the United States so it’s fair to say people still don’t know much about them as a product. So we are here to say paper lanterns are environmentally friendly so please don’t be afraid to use them!

paper lantern environmentThe lanterns are made with natural materials, a thin biodegradable rice paper as the balloon and a bamboo rim. The fuel cell is a waxy cardboard which is biodegradable, the fuel cell is attached to the bamboo rim with a fine wire which is also biodegradable once moisture sets in. The lanterns can be used over fields and water without problems as they are not lit when they float back to the ground, the lantern self extinguishes itself whilst in the air and it’s the lack of heat from the flame which causes it to extinguish and float back down to earth.
