Halloween is one of the most celebrated traditions in the world, children love it and there’s no surprise as to why. They get to dress up and collect candy all night, what’s not to love? So with Halloween just around the corner it’s got the team at Sky Wish Lanterns thinking about the tradition and everything that’s associated with it such as Jack O’ Lanterns. How did it become so traditional to carve out a pumpkin into a scary face and place candles inside? Well it all started when immigrants came to America in 1800s during the Irish Potato famine bringing with them the tradition of Halloween and the use of Jack O’ Lanterns.
The lanterns were traditionally carved out of turnips or potatoes and lit with a burning lump of coal or candle and were to represent the souls of their loved ones who had passed away and were placed outside their homes to welcome the deceased. They were also thought to ward off wicked spirits. In America turnips were not as readily available so they started replacing them with pumpkins which proved to be an even better replacement due to their size. This is why pumpkins are now the new Jack O’ Lanterns and represent the tradition of Halloween.
So after the pumpkin chat we got to thinking about whether Jack O’ Lanterns or Sky Lanterns would be better for us to use at Halloween this year. It was a no brainer, we all voted Sky Lanterns!
